THE ENNEAGRAM: FILTERS AND FALSE HOPES
Joel M. Rothaizer, Ph.D. & Sandra L. Hill, M.A.

The Instinctual Center

The Instinctual Center is also called the Body-Based Center. The points in this triad have certain themes in common. We all have these qualities, but they’re particularly dominant in this triad:

Higher Characteristics: The Instinctual Center is about our sense of Being. Being in the body, alive, expansive, and grounded. Some people say that this Center determines the extent to which you feel connected and at one with everything. The body is also seen as our anchor for being in the present moment – to the extent that you can sense your body, to that degree you are present. It is the intelligence that enables us to function in the physical world. This Center is also about autonomy, independence, and the ability to assert my own will and direct my own life. It is also the center of strong opinions, because strong opinions are located in the gut, not in the mind.

Fixated Characteristics: When we lose touch with the essential qualities of this Center, we focus more on wanting to not be under anyone’s control, to not be messed with. There is anger when our autonomy is perceived as being threatened. Aggression, self-assertion, tension and resistance appear. Now there’s a concern for how to protect our autonomy, how to be impervious to the hurts of the world. This Center becomes the home of intense energies and the superego.

POINT EIGHT
The Challenger (The Boss, Top Dog, Asserter, Leader)
The Powerful, Dominating Type
Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, Confrontational

Filter: Who has the power? Is anyone trying to control me? Can I trust you? Are you friend or foe?

Basic Fear: Of being harmed or controlled by others, being vulnerable

False Hope: If I can just be strong enough and in control of my situation – if I can protect myself - if I can be assertive enough, self-reliant enough, and expansive enough, then no one will mess with me, and I’ll be safe and protected, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

POINT NINE
The Peacemaker (The Mediator)
The Pleasant, Self-Effacing Type
Receptive, Optimistic, Complacent, and Resigned

Filter: How can I stay comfortable? Where can I find a sense of harmony? What do other people want and need? How can I avoid conflict (or not see it)?

Basic Fear:  Of loss and separation, being cut off

False Hope:  If I can create enough “peace of mind” and inner stability – if there is enough harmony and comfort – if I withdraw into my own world – if I can be self-effacing enough - if I can make sure that everyone around me is OK - then no one will mess with me, and I’ll be safe and protected, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

POINT ONE
The Reformer (The Perfectionist)
The Rational (Rationalizing), Idealistic Type
Principled, Purposeful, Self-Controlled, and Perfectionistic

Filter: I see what’s wrong, and how it can be improved. I carry around an internal yardstick and measure myself and others against it.

Basic Fear:  Of being corrupt/evil, defective (something is inherently wrong with me)

False Hope:  If I can be good enough, have enough integrity, be perfect enough, objective and impartial enough – if I trust my inner judge – if I control my inner passions - if I do what’s right, if I’m a good person – if I’m on the side of the angels - then no one will mess with me, and I’ll be safe and protected, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

The Feeling Center

The Feeling Center is also called Heart Center. The points in this triad have certain themes in common. We all have these qualities, but they’re particularly dominant in this triad:

Higher Characteristics: The heart allows us to connect with our experience in a way that makes an impression on us, makes an impression on our souls, and allows us to make the most of all our experiences. The heart is the seat of value – residing there we are value. It is also seen as the seat of true identity – when abiding there true identity is a direct experience. Transformation of the heart is the transformation of true identity. This Center is about nurturing, identity, value, and love. There are connections with other Centers. While the mind can present possibilities, it’s only the heart that knows – re recognize Truth in the heart. In the belly (Instinctual Center) we get more connected; in the heart we taste what’s here in this connection. Heart energy is subtle, sweet, and sensitive; some say that it slips away unless grounded in belly, and that the heart can’t stay open without the strength that comes from opening the belly.  The heart is the seat of transformation. Some say that transformation comes when at least two Centers are involved, one of them being the Heart.

Fixated Characteristics:  When we lose touch with the essential qualities of this Center, we lose core Self-esteem and the ego steps in to fix this. We create an image and construct an identity. We try to figure out how to be appreciated, valued, and loved. We try to cover an underlying sense of shame, worthlessness, and deficiency by becoming self-absorbed and needing constant admiration When we perceive our ego identity as being attacked or undermined we feel hostility and hatred.

POINT TWO
The Helper (The Giver, Supporter, Care-Taker)
The Caring, Interpersonal Type
Concerned, Generous, Possessive, Manipulative

Filter:  What are other people feeling? What do they need? How can I meet their needs?

Basic Fear:  Of being unwanted, unworthy of being loved

False Hope:  If I take care of people well enough – if I have enough intimacy and sense of connection in my life – if I’m loving, caring, and selfless enough  - if I can elicit enough positive responses from others - then I’ll be loved unconditionally, I’ll know that I’m of value, and I’ll have a deep and abiding sense of my true identity, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

POINT THREE
The Achiever (The Performer, Producer)
The Success-Oriented, Efficient Type
Adaptable, Ambitious, Image-Conscious, and Arrogant

Filter:  How can I be successful? How can I accomplish the next goal as efficiently as possible?

Basic Fear:  Of being empty and worthless, without any intrinsic value

False Hope:  - If I can be successful enough – if I have it all together - if I make myself valuable and worthwhile enough – if I get enough validation and admiration – if others think well enough of me  – if I develop myself fully - if I’m adaptable enough - then I’ll be loved unconditionally, I’ll know that I’m of value, and I’ll have a deep and abiding sense of my true identity, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

POINT FOUR
The Individualist (The Romantic, Tragic Romantic, Connoisseur)
The Sensitive, Withdrawn Type
Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, Self-Indulgent

Filter:  What’s missing in the present? What did I have that was of value, but that I lost? What do I long for now (a romantic, bittersweet longing)? What am I envious of? How am I different from other people?

Basic Fear:  Of having no identity or personal significance; being unfinished/defective

False Hope:  If I can be special, creative and unique enough – if I can find myself, who I really am – if I continually feel things deeply and authentically  - if I’m true to myself to (my feelings) – if I can complete myself, perfect myself - if someone comes along who can see who I really am - then I’ll be loved unconditionally, I’ll know that I’m of value, and I’ll have a deep and abiding sense of my true identity, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

The Mental Center

The Mental Center is also called thinking center. The points in this triad have certain themes in common. We all have these qualities, but they’re particularly dominant in this triad:

Higher Characteristics:  The gifts of the Mental Center are the inner guidance and inner knowing that are found in the quiet mind. Within this Center is the deep, quiet inner voice that gently directs our lives. The quiet mind reflects Presence, and from this sense of emptiness and knowing flow existential faith, trust, confidence, and inner serenity. This Center also has the inquiring mind that can understand, analyze and synthesize.

Fixated Characteristics:  When we lose touch with the essential qualities of this Center we start looking for guidance and support outside of ourselves. We want security, to know that our environment is safe and stable. We feel fear due to the perceived lack of safety and security. Uncertainty and anxiety become prevalent. We begin to have a chattering mind that’s busy with strategizing and figuring things out. It goes from an inquiring mind to a judging mind. We start to worry: How do I make choices? Where do I go from here? We focus on the future. This Center often provides a funny sense of the world, because humor relieves anxiety.

POINT FIVE
The Investigator (The Observer, Sage, Thinker)
The Intense, Cerebral Type
Perceptive, Original, Preoccupied, and Provocative

Filter:  Detaching from the situation, stepping back to analyze it; protecting my personal resources (time, space, energy)

Basic Fear:  Being useless, helpless, or incapable (overwhelmed) – having no role to play – not belonging here (alien) - being overwhelmed in the physical universe

False Hope:  If I can be capable and competent enough – if I can figure out the world – if I find a niche and focus myself enough - – if I achieve enough mastery - then I’ll be safe and secure, confident and serene, with deep inner guidance, trust and support, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

POINT SIX
The Loyalist (loyal to whatever provides security, whatever affiliations are important)
(The Devil’s Advocate, Trooper, Loyal Skeptic, Questioner, Guardian, Group-Loyalist)
The Committed, Security-Oriented Type
(Testing is also a good word – Sixes kick the tires)
Engaging, Responsible, Defensive, and Defiant

Filter:  Where is the danger? What might be the worst-case scenario? How can I prepare for it? What are peoples’ underlying motives? Who can I trust?

Basic Fear:  Of being unable to survive on their own (being without support and guidance; abandonment)

False Hope:  If I can find enough security, support, mentoring and guidance (from the outside)  - if I’m reliable, loyal, dependable, likeable and trustworthy enough – if I do what’s expected of me - then I’ll be safe and secure, confident and serene, with deep inner guidance, trust and support, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.

POINT SEVEN
The Enthusiast (The Epicure, Visionary, Adventurer, Generalist, Optimist)
The Busy, Fun-Loving Type
Spontaneous, Accomplished, Excessive, and Manic

Filter:  What’s the next interesting, stimulating, fun thing to do? What can I plan next?

Basic Fear:  Of being deprived and in trapped in pain – I’ll never get my needs met – I won’t find in my life the person/entity/thing who will really fulfill me, the missing piece – I’m terrified of missing it and then I’ll be trapped and miss out on the divine plan

False Hope:  If I keep getting my needs fulfilled – if I find enough satisfaction and contentment – if I plan enough to have sufficient positive experiences – if I stay happy, enthusiastic, free-spirited, energetic and cheerful- then I’ll be safe and secure, confident and serene, with deep inner guidance, trust and support, and then I'll be happy and fulfilled.
